Throughout its history, it has served as a watchtower, lighthouse, prison, and even a quarantine isolation facility. It has survived fires and earthquakes, was rebuilt in stone in the 18th century, and later became a romantic symbol of Istanbul. Legends are associated with the tower - about the Sultan's daughter who perished from a snake bite and the tragic love of Leander and Hero.
